Active recall changes the way you revise.

Instead of looking at the answer again, you practise bringing the answer back from memory.

This makes it easier to identify what you know, what you have forgotten and what you still need to understand.

What is active recall?

Active recall is the process of retrieving information from memory without immediately looking at your notes, textbook or source material.

You are using active recall when you:

How to use active recall

You do not need to completely change the way you study. Start by adding retrieval to activities you already use.

After reading a chapter

Close the book and answer:

  • What was the central idea?
  • What were the main arguments?
  • Which examples were used?
  • What could I not explain clearly?
  • How does this connect to an earlier topic?

After watching a lecture

Pause after each major section and explain what was covered. Try to predict what the lecturer will discuss next before continuing.

When using flashcards

Answer the complete question before revealing the response. Do not immediately turn the card over when the answer does not come to mind. Pause and make a genuine attempt first.
