Long-term memory is not a one-shot effect of studying hard. It is the result of repeated retrieval, distributed across time, on material that is connected to other things you already know. This article walks through what cognitive science says about consolidation and the study patterns that exploit it.
Consolidation takes time
After you study, your brain continues to process the material — especially during sleep. That is why a single intense session rarely produces durable memory: there has not been enough time for consolidation. Distributed practice across multiple days outperforms massed practice of the same total length in study after study.
Spacing exploits consolidation
If you revisit material just as you are about to forget it, you reset the forgetting curve from a higher baseline. Spaced repetition algorithms schedule reviews to land near that point, which is why they produce strong retention for relatively little total time.
Interleaving builds transfer
Mixing topics within a session is harder than blocking one topic at a time, which is part of why it works. The extra effort forces your brain to distinguish between problem types and choose the right approach — a skill that transfers to exam conditions.
