Spaced repetition is a way of scheduling reviews so that you see material just as you are about to forget it. The result is much stronger long-term memory for the same total time spent revising. This article explains how it works and how to use it without burning out.
Why timing matters
Each successful retrieval resets the forgetting curve from a higher baseline. If you wait too long, you forget completely and have to relearn. If you review too soon, you waste effort on material that is still fresh. Spaced repetition algorithms try to schedule each review near the point of imminent forgetting.
Spaced repetition at university scale
For a single course, a deck of a few hundred flashcards reviewed daily is manageable. For an entire degree, decks pile up. The practical move is to focus active review on material that is currently being tested or applied, and to archive material from courses you have completed unless you expect to use it again.
When spaced repetition is not the right tool
Spaced repetition is best for discrete facts, definitions, and small applied skills. For complex problem-solving or essay writing, retrieval practice and mixed practice problems matter more than scheduled flashcard reviews. Use spaced repetition where it fits and other active-recall tools elsewhere.
